Blues right to wait for Costa – Mourinho
Jose Mourinho says Diego Costa’s incredible start to his Chelsea career vindicates the club’s decision not to rush into the transfer market last season.
Costa, a £32m summer signing from Atletico Madrid, took his Blues tally to seven goals in four games with a classy hat-trick in the thrilling 4-2 comeback win against Swansea City.
The Chelsea manager said: “I think everybody knows we did the right thing by waiting for him and not going to the market in the summer of 2013 or January 2014 just to buy a striker.
“Chelsea did well by waiting and waiting for the right one. The team was building in a way where we were waiting for a certain type of striker.”
Chelsea narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season, with many citing the lack of a goalscoring centre-forward.
But they sit three points clear at the top of the table after winning their opening four games this season, and Costa has scored seven of their 15 goals so far.
Mourinho does not expect the Brazilian-born striker to continue his phenomenal ratio.
“I am not looking for this,” Mourinho said. “If the team plays well he has to score goals.
“Seven goals in four Premier League matches is maybe is too much. We cannot expect him to score 14 goals after eight matches. That is too much.
“But the way he’s playing and the team is playing, if he keeps scoring a few goals, a few goals give points and points help the team.
“Seven goals in four matches surprises me because that is not normal. You cannot repeat it.
“Maybe in the next four matches he will score two goals and that is good. But he is comfortable in the team.”
Meanwhile, Swansea manager Garry Monk tipped Chelsea to win the Premier League title this season.
