Mourinho being unfairly punished, claims Terry
John Terry believes Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is being unfairly punished for speaking his mind over refereeing decisions.
Mourinho has been handed a one-game stadium ban and fined £40,000 after being sent to the stands for contesting Nemanja Matic’s red card at West Ham last month.
The club are also appealing a separate £50,000 fine and a suspended stadium ban imposed on Mourinho for claiming after Chelsea’s home defeat by Southampton that officials were “afraid” to award his team penalties.
But Blues skipper Terry has defended his manager and feels fans want to hear honest views without the fear of punishment.
He said: “There’s been decisions that have gone against us, and there will be decisions that go for us that we don’t deserve. That’s a season.
“When Mark Clattenburg sent me off at West Brom, I went to see him after the game – we agreed to disagree.
“I saw him again before the game at the weekend [against Liverpool], he was still adamant it was a sending off, I was still adamant it wasn’t.
“It didn’t get heated at all, we just had a man-to-man discussion.
“With the manager, he has to put his face in front of the TV cameras and sometimes that passion does come out but that’s because he cares for the football club. That’s what the fans want to see.
“He gets punished, he gets fined and it’s a little bit unfair.
“It’s difficult for the refs as well, they’re under the spotlight and they’ve got to make quick decisions. But it’s not just our manager that does it, all managers do it.”
