Mourinho keen to ‘protect’ Costa & Remy

Jose Mourinho has said Loic Remy, Diego Costa, Oscar and Thibaut Courtois could all have featured against Leicester, but Chelsea’s comfortable lead at the top of the Premier League meant there was no need to risk them.

Nineteen-goal striker Costa was left out of the squad because of his hamstring problem and fellow forward Remy has also been nursing an injury.

Oscar took a knock to the head against Arsenal and goalkeeper Courtois was “not 100% fit” according to Mourinho.

The Blues boss explained: “We don’t need to risk. If we lose against Arsenal or Leicester I would go with them because they are both there.

“Diego and Remy, they trained yesterday [Tuesday] with the team. Today [Wednesday] they trained – without us, but the training was really hard and intense.

“It was the same with Oscar. He was ready to play when we were losing 1-0. In the moment we were winning I don’t need to play Oscar. He is fine.

“When you can protect, you protect. And the other way to protect is when you have the two best goalkeepers in the world, if one has a little pain and is 98%, you play the one that is 100%.”
