Manager Guus Hiddink said Chelsea’s blistering attacking start to their emphatic 5-1 win over Newcastle was pre-planned and based on their workrate.
The Blues led 3-0 after 16 minutes and had no trouble in closing out victory in a one-sided game against lacklustre opposition.
“We tried to surprise them in the early period of the game, in which we succeeded with two beautiful early goals,” Hiddink said.
“And within 20 minutes it was rather decisive.”
Diego Costa, Pedro and Willian were all on target, but Hiddink said the win was based on endeavour as much as their ability.
“Everyone knows we have players of quality; they have shown that in the past,” he said.
“But now they are convinced and taking responsibility to do what I call the responsible work and that is not the nicest work for players who have big, big quality.
“Nowadays, with all the teams so competitive, you cannot afford two or three players who are not taking the defensive responsibility and, let it go and rely on their quality.”
And the Dutchman, who remains unbeaten in 11 games since taking over, said the victory was much needed.
“We have been unbeaten since December, but we were not really, really proud of that,” he added.
“There were too many draws. We would like to have victories. It is good today to have that victory.”
