Chelsea youngsters win record penalty shoot-out

Kurt Zouma and Marco van Ginkel both featured as Chelsea Under-23s won the longest penalty shoot-out in English football history, beating Oxford United 13-12 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw in the EFL Trophy.

Goalkeeper Bradley Collins proved the hero for the Blues as he scored the 33rd penalty and then saved the 34th from Wes Thomas to earn Chelsea a bonus point in their final group game.

However, the Blues had already been eliminated from the new-look competition after previous defeats by Swindon and Exeter.

The marathon shoot-out, which took around 20 minutes, beats the previous 32-kick record equalled earlier this season by Derby and Carlisle in the League Cup.

Zouma and van Ginkel both came through 90 minutes and scored from the spot as they continued their comeback from injuries.

Van Ginkel was particularly influential, hitting the post and then having a hand in Chelsea’s opener just before half-time when his cross was cleared out to Josimar Quintero, who found the bottom corner.

Oxford had their chances and looked to be out of luck when Collins denied Thomas in injury-time, but they equalised with virtually the last kick of normal time as Kane Hemmings converted a cross.

Every player took at least one penalty as Collins and Oxford keeper Simon Eastwood made several saves, before Chelsea eventually prevailed.
