Nathan Ake has signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea and has joined Watford on a season-long loan.
The 20-year-old Dutchman, who can play in defence or midfield, has made 12 first-team appearances for Chelsea and is regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects.
He ended last season on loan at Championship side Reading and several second-tier clubs wanted to take him on loan this term, but Chelsea were keen for him to gain Premier League experience.
Ake, a Netherlands Under-21 international, was snapped up by the Blues in 2011 and made his senior debut on Boxing Day 2012 when he came on as a substitute against Norwich City.
