Chelsea v Manchester United player ratings
Ross Barkley’s last-gasp goal dramatically preserved Chelsea’s unbeaten record under boss Maurizio Sarri. Here’s how we rated each Blues player in the 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
Kepa Arrizabalaga: 7
Barely troubled before United’s two second-half goals. He produced a good save shortly before the first when he denied Juan Mata.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
A typically steady display at right-back. Might have done better for United’s second goal.
David Luiz: 6
Lost the ball in the build up to United’s second goal and missed a good chance when he headed wide in the second half. Made amends by making a nuisance of himself in the United box in the final seconds, leading to Barkley’s equaliser.
Antonio Rudiger: 8
Effective at both ends of the pitch. Defended well and scored with a fine header from Willian’s corner after drifting away from Paul Pogba.
Marcos Alonso: 6
Worked hard at left-back and he needed to, because Marcus Rashford caused him problems. The Spaniard has certainly had better days.
Mateo Kovacic: 7
Bright in the first half, when he won several challenges in midfield and was first to the ball on numerous occasions. Faded slightly before being replaced by Barkley midway through the second half.
Jorginho: 7
Mostly a fine display, marred only by the second-half spell in which United got the better of things in midfield. The Italian was at the centre of much of Chelsea’s best work and the highlight of his performance was a sublime pass to Alvaro Morata in the second half after evading two challenges.
N’Golo Kante: 7
Full of energy as always and was denied by a good save when David De Gea pushed away his second-half shot. It still seems odd to see Kante popping up in the final third, though.
Willian: 8
Covered loads of ground and was always a threat to the United defence, both with his work on and off the ball and also his set-piece deliveries – a corner led to Rudiger’s goal and a free-kick should have resulted in a goal by Luiz.
Eden Hazard: 7
United worked hard to contain him, with some success. Chelsea’s talisman nevertheless made a major contribution, creating space for his team-mates as the visiting defence focused largely on him. Denied by a near-post save from De Gea in the second half.
Alvaro Morata: 6
Worked hard up front but it was another frustrating afternoon in front of goal for the striker, who sent a wayward effort off-target in the first half and was unable to find a way past De Gea in the second after being set up by Jorginho.
Ross Barkley: 7
Lively after coming on and came up with the all-important goal. Pedro and Olivier Giroud also contributed after also coming off the bench.
