Man Utd v Chelsea player ratings
Chelsea suffered a setback in their pursuit of the Premier League title as they were beaten at Old Trafford. Here’s how we rated each Blues player in the 2-0 defeat against Manchester United.
Asmir Begovic: 6
Did nothing obviously wrong, but Chelsea missed Thibaut Courtois. Begovic was much less assertive when balls were sent into the box and could arguably have done better for United’s first goal, when his positioning wasn’t great and he appeared to go to ground too early when trying to thwart Marcus Rashford.
Kurt Zouma: 5
Unlucky when Ander Herrera’s shot deflected in off the defender. But Zouma, a last-minute inclusion after Marcos Alonso was withdrawn from the side, never looked comfortable. His lack of match sharpness was obvious as United’s pacy attack swept forward.
David Luiz: 6
Better in the second half but was all over the place at times in the first, not least when Rashford drifted away from him to score the all-important first goal.
Gary Cahill: 6
Below his best as well. Was caused serious problems by Jesse Lingard in the first half.
Victor Moses: 6
Got through a fair amount of defensive work but had no joy at all in an attacking sense before being taken off in the second half.
N’Golo Kante: 5
A rare off-day for the usually brilliant midfielder. He was unable to impose himself and was caught out in the build up to the second goal, twice allowing Ashley Young to get away from him.
Nemanja Matic: 5
Also found the going tough in midfield, but had reason to feel aggrieved after Herrera used an arm to intercept the Serbian’s pass before setting up the opening goal.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 5
Has proved his versatility many times over, but it was unhappy afternoon for the Spaniard on the left.
Eden Hazard: 5
Well marked by Herrera, but it handed Hazard a potential opportunity he failed to seize; had the Belgian shown more movement and dragged his marker into different areas of the pitch it might have created space for his team-mates and left United stretched.
Pedro: 5
Another Blues player well short of his best and whose lack of movement was noticeable. Easily contained by United.
Diego Costa: 5
A long-range shot well wide of the target late in the first half was as much as Costa could muster. His frustration got the better of him when he picked up a first-half yellow card and he never seriously troubled the United defence.
Cesc Fabregas: 6
Sent on early in the second half and was neat and tidy without affecting the course of the game.
Willian: 6
Also unable to make an real impact after being brought on.
