Marcos Alonso’s 88th-minute goal gave Chelsea a dramatic victory in Tottenham’s first home league game at Wembley.

Alonso’s brilliant free-kick put Chelsea ahead but Tottenham dominated much of a fiercely contested derby and equalised courtesy of Michy Batshuayi’s late own goal.

However, the champions hit back five minutes later when Alonso netted again, this time running on to Pedro’s pass and smashing a first-time shot under keeper Hugo Lloris.

Alonso had opened the scoring with a 24th-minute free-kick, delightfully lifting the ball over the Spurs wall and beyond Lloris.

The goal came against the run of play, although Alvaro Morata had missed a great chance to give Chelsea an early lead.

Morata, making his first Premier League start, headed wide of the target when found unmarked by Cesar Azpilicueta’s fifth-minute cross.

Tottenham dominated for large spells after the first goal and Thibaut Courtois was the busier keeper, denying Harry Kane and Ben Davies during a spell of sustained first-half pressure.

And Kane very nearly equalised when he fired against the post after Dele Alli had turned away from Azpilicueta and set up the England striker.

Chelsea, with summer signing Tiémoué Bakayoko making his debut, also spent much of the second half being forced to defend.

But they were dangerous on the counter-attack and went close to doubling their lead when Willian’s shot hit the post.

Spurs got the equaliser they deserved when Batshuayi, having just come on as a substitute, headed Christian Eriksen’s left-wing free-kick into his own net with seven minutes remaining.

But they then switched off at the back and Alonso took full advantage.
