Mount’s cracking goal gives Chelsea victory over Aston Villa
Chelsea 2 Aston Villa 1
Chelsea returned to winning ways courtesy of Mason Mount’s stunning goal.
Tammy Abraham put them ahead with his 12th goal of the season before Trezeguet hauled Aston Villa level shortly before half-time.
Abraham, passed fit to play after taking a knock to the hip against Valencia, showed how much he was missed in Saturday’s loss to West Ham.
Reece James delivered a great cross from the right and Abraham took advantage of some poor marking to head home.
Villa hit back against the run of play when Ahmed El Mohamady whipped in a cross and Trezeguet’s header bounced up off his leg and past keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
However, Mount restored Chelsea’s lead with a superb volley after Abraham had chested down Willian’s cross.
Chelsea dominated large parts of the game and could easily have won by a greater margin.
Villa keeper Tom Heaton denied them a third goal by tipping Willian’s free-kick on to the bar.
The home fans, who gave Villa assistant boss John Terry a hero’s welcome on the ex-Chelsea captain’s return to Stamford Bridge, did have to endure an anxious final few minutes.
El Mohamady missed a good chance when he blasted over, and Kepa kept out a late header from Douglas Luiz.
