Ferdinand suggests Abraham is being treated unfairly

Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Tammy Abraham is being treated unfairly by Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea boss Tuchel has overlooked Abraham while persisting with Timo Werner despite the German’s woes in front of goal.

And former Manchester United and England star Ferdinand believes young English players like Abraham are treated differently to expensive signings.

Werner missed a sitter in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid, having also been guilty of an appalling miss at West Ham at the weekend.

Abraham, on the other hand, has a very decent scoring record for the Blues but has barely featured in recent weeks.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “It’s crazy. A young player; does he get the time that a Timo Werner gets – a big signing gets?

“They’re not treated with maybe as much care and understanding of their character and with the cotton wool that a new signing gets.

“I know a new signing is an investment. But you’re (also) investing in a young player.

“A young player adds so much value to a team and they don’t ever get that time, that patience, a signing gets. Tammy wouldn’t get that time.

“He (Werner) scored at the weekend but missed a sitter and missed another one (against Real). If you’re Tammy you’re saying ‘“Right, I’ve got to be playing’.”

Ferdinand’s fellow pundit Joe Cole also believes Abraham has every reason to feel aggrieved – and that the England striker would have put away Werner’s early chance against Real.

The former Chelsea star said: “Imagine if that ball drops to him in the semi-final of the Champions League – he’s going to tuck that away, I think.”
