Fears over Chelsea duo’s injuries are eased

Kurt Zouma’s head injury is not as bad as first feared and the defender did not require hospital treatment.

The Chelsea centre-back was stretchered off with his neck in a brace during the 3-1 Capital One Cup win over Derby County after being clattered into by Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech.

But manager Jose Mourinho said neither that injury, nor the ankle knock suffered by Didier Drogba, was serious.

“He (Zouma) is is fine,” Mourinho said.

“He was just a bit dizzy and he had some blood in his mouth because of a cut. He goes now for some examinations with the doctor but he is fine.”

When asked how Drogba’s ankle  was, Mourinho joked “big”, referring to the fact the Ivorian twisted his left ankle when he slipped over after the break.

Mourinho added: “He is a strong guy with a strong mentality and he wants to play and wants to help. I think he will be okay.”

Mourinho was delighted with the clinical win against the Rams, who were second best throughout.

He said: “If we don’t do (a professional job) we lose. I knew that,

“I played here last season and I watched them play a few matches on TV in the Championship I know the quality they have.

“And I know if you do not come with a strong side and strong bench it will be a problem for us, so we had to bring a strong team.

“I think the players showed that attitude by playing a very professional game.”
