Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has insisted that Daniel Sturridge is part of his plans and will be staying at Stamford Bridge.
The forward fell out of favour towards the end of last season and has made it clear he wants to play as a central striker rather than in a wide role.
Arsenal have been linked with him, while Sturridge’s former club Manchester City were reported to have shown an interest in taking him back to Eastlands.
But Di Matteo said: “He is part of the squad and of the team and still has a lot to give.
“He has a lot to learn as well, but we’re hopeful he will develop even more and become a great player for us.
“He has the ability to play in more than one position and has made it quite public that he likes to play as a number nine, where there is competition.
“Competition is a good thing. We will see, once the season starts, where he’s going to play.”
