Luiz ‘delighted’ to be back at Stamford Bridge
David Luiz is back at Chelsea.
A deal was completed to re-sign the Brazilian defender from Paris St-Germain shortly before Wednesday night’s transfer deadline.
Luiz, 29, has signed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge and declared: “I’m delighted to return.”
The move went through after Chelsea, determined to sign a centre-back, made a surprise approach to PSG for the man they sold to the French club in 2014.
The Blues had been unable to agree a deal with Napoli for Kalidou Koulibaly, while AC Milan similarly refused to part with Alessio Romagnoli.
Luiz made 81 Premier League appearances for the club during a three-and-a-half-year spell.
“I always had a wonderful relationship with the fans and I am looking forward to wearing the blue shirt at Stamford Bridge once again,” he told Chelsea’s website.
Earlier on transfer deadline day, Chelsea signed left-back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina on a five-year deal.
A former Real Madrid academy graduate, who made one first-team appearance for the Spanish giants, Alonso moved to Bolton in the summer of 2010, and made 46 appearances for them over three seasons.
He was a team-mate of Gary Cahill for 18 months before the England international’s move to Chelsea.
He joined Fiorentina in 2013 but returned to the Premier League shortly afterwards when signed on loan by Sunderland, playing in the League Cup final against Manchester City and being part of the Black Cats team that won at Stamford Bridge, ending Jose Mourinho’s 77-game undefeated home league run.
Alonso returned to Fiorentina and last season established himself as a regular as they finished fifth in Serie A.
