Christensen was tired, says Conte

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte says centre-back Andreas Christensen was left out against West Ham because he has become mentally jaded.

The 22-year-old has become a regular under Conte this season, keeping out both David Luiz and England international Gary Cahill at different stages.

But the Dane and has made several errors that have led to goals and was dropped against the Hammers after being at fault for Tottenham’s third goal in their recent 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

“Don’t forget, we’re talking about a young player,” Conte said. “For him, this is the first season to play at this level and to play at this level it means that you lose a lot of mental energy. It could be that he can be a bit tired.

“At the same time, I think to give Gary Cahill the possibility to play is right. We are talking about an important player, not only for Chelsea but also for the national team.”

Christensen has made 37 appearances for the Blues this season and Conte said he could still add to that tally in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton or remaining Premier League fixtures.

Conte added: “I have this opportunity to make rotations – especially in the defensive line – and when there is the possibility, when I see some situations, I try to change something.

“At this moment, I have four central defenders. From now until the end [of the season], I think I will make rotations to give everyone the possibility to play.”
