Kurt Zouma will step up his recovery from injury with another game for Chelsea’s Under-23s next week and could return to the first-team squad straight after the international break.
The French centre-back, who suffered cruciate knee ligament damage in February, has completed his second week of full training and played for the Blues’ development squad in recent matches against Derby and Everton.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte confirmed Zouma would also play against Oxford United’s first team in the EFL Trophy game at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
“He played two games with the Under-23s and he will play another game on Tuesday,” Conte said.
“His recovery is very good, we are satisfied with it. Now we hope he can stay with us for the rest of the season.”
Conte also confirmed Cesc Fabregas was on the mend after a recent injury and that both he and Zouma could be in contention for the trip to Middlesbrough on 20 November.
He said: “I’m pleased for Cesc because he is important for us, and also for Kurt.
“It’s normal that when you restart after a long period of rest you need to find the best form, the best shape.
“I think after an international break they will be available for selection.”
