Chelsea beat Inter Milan on penalties in a pre-season friendly in Nice.
The International Champions Cup game produced a 1-1 draw, with Roberto Gagliardini equalising early in the second half for Inter, cancelling out Pedro’s early goal.
Chelsea won 5-4 in the shoot-out, with Jorginho, Danny Drinkwater, Victor Moses and Tammy Abraham all scoring from the spot before Cesar Azpilicueta netted the winning penalty.
Chelsea had made a lively start to the game and went ahead after nine minutes.
Alvaro Morata robbed Inter defender Danilo D’Ambrosio near the touchline and, after keeper Samir Handanovic parried the striker’s shot, Pedro – on his 31st birthday – was on hand to score from close range.
Earlier, Morata had a goal disallowed for offside after heading in Cesc Fabregas’ ball into the box.
Chelsea, playing their second game under new boss Maurizio Sarri, looked impressive before becoming somewhat disjointed during the latter stages of the first half.
And three minutes into the second, Mauro Icardi picked the ball up after a mistake by Tiemoue Bakayoko and set up Gagliardini, who fired past Willy Caballero.
Keeper Caballero, who replaced youngster Marcin Bulka at half-time, made a superb late save to deny Lautaro Martínez and then kept out Milan Skriniar’s penalty in the shoot-out.
On a negative note for Chelsea, defender Andreas Christensen limped off with a couple of minutes of the game remaining after appearing to twist his knee.
