Chelsea v Arsenal player ratings
Kurt Zouma and Eden Hazard were on the scoresheet as Chelsea secured a vital 2-0 win over Arsenal. Here’s how we rated the players in the controversial win at Stamford Bridge.
Asmir Begovic: 6
Another easy day’s work for the Chelsea keeper following his straightforward appearance against Maccabi Tel Aviv in midweek. Barely had a shot to save but stayed alert and looked in control.
Branislav Ivanovic: 8
Was caught out early on but was much more sensible with his attacking forays and made numerous important clearances and blocks. Was strong in the air, solid on the deck and did a fine job as Chelsea’s captain for the day.
Kurt Zouma: 8
Fully justified Jose Mourinho’s decision to prefer him in central defence to the vastly more experienced John Terry. Zouma looked confident from the off, and even more so after some eye-catching and crowd-pleasing sliding challenges. Dealt with Theo Walcott and also scored with a fine header to set Chelsea on their way.
Gary Cahill: 7
Thrives on the added responsibility of playing alongside Zouma. And although his partnership with Terry is often a match-winning one, the added pace of Zouma can relieve a bit of pressure on Cahill, as the Frenchman can cover for the occasional lapse in concentration.
Cesar Azplicueta: 7
The most consistent defender Chelsea have had in years, so a faultless, no-nonsense display is expected. Defended without alarm and was always available in attack.
Nemanja Matic: 8
Imposing and impressive throughout, he controlled things against Arsenal’s lightweight midfield attackers and was always on hand to break up play and give the early “transition” Mourinho demands.
Cesc Fabregas: 8
After some indifferent displays the Spaniard reminded everyone just what he is all about with an assured showing that combined good energy and sound defensive work with a delightful range of probing passing in the final third. And a fabulous assist for Zouma’s header.
Eden Hazard: 8
Having received the backing of his manager the Belgian repaid Mourinho’s faith with his most effective performance of the season. His last-gasp goal added the gloss to a classy display full of running and his usual tricks. He could easily have won a penalty and also put in some fine defensive work.
Pedro: 7
Like all his midfield colleagues he played with great urgency and did the ugly things, as well as being a constant threat with his pace and direct running throughout. Provided a good outlet which often needed two markers and freed up space for Eden Hazard.
Oscar: 8
Brings vital balance and knowhow to the much-talked about number 10 role and looks totally at home there. The Brazilian flitted between defence and attack effortlessly, using the ball effectively when coming deep and causing no end of problems with countless intelligent runs.
Diego Costa: 9
Feisty does not even begin to describe the Spain striker’s display. He could easily have been sent off for several misdemeanours and altercations but he was back to his very best, making dangerous runs in behind, running with the ball, holding up play and irritating and hassling defenders from the first minute to his late withdrawl.
Ramires: 6
A steady and sensible contribution in the last 20 minutes after replacing Oscar. He sat deeper but still got forward when possible to ensure Chelsea did not lose the initiative.
