Antonio Conte has indicated that Gary Cahill will return to the Chelsea side for Tuesday’s clash with Southampton, although a final decision will be taken on the day of the game.
Cahill missed Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win against Tottenham because of illness and was replaced by Nathan Ake, who had an excellent game.
Blues boss Conte said: “He (Cahill) trained with us yesterday and today.
“It’s normal to check the condition and I want to speak with him tomorrow before making a decision. I am very happy that he is able to play tomorrow.
“But I was pleased with Ake’s performance. He played a really good game and is very important for us.”
Chelsea have no injury concerns ahead of the match at Stamford Bridge, where a win would take them seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.
However, Conte is keen to assess his squad following a tough encounter with rivals Spurs.
“I have in my mind the starting 11 tomorrow but I want to check the physical condition of every player because our game (against Tottenham) was intense,” the Italian said.
“But we have trained very well this season and have a lot of energy to face this kind of situation.”
Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are set to return to the starting line-up, having been substitutes at the weekend.
“I have another day to decide our starting 11 but I think they are in good condition and good form,” Conte said.
