Chelsea prospect used psychologist to help him cope with injury
Chelsea youngster Jordan Houghton said working with a psychologist helped him overcome the mental anguish of a six-and-a-half month injury lay-off.
The 21-year-old suffered a serious knee injury while playing for loan club Doncaster Rovers against Luton in February.
He returned to Doncaster for a second loan stint on transfer deadline day and made his playing comeback in the final 20 minutes of their game with Peterborough on Saturday.
“It’s great to be back,” Houghton told Doncaster’s website.
“I’ve come back earlier than expected, so the physios have said to the manager to keep the reins on me a bit but hopefully I can work my way back to full fitness and then into the side.
“When you get back into it you have to be physically and mentally ready. A major thing in football is how you come back from setbacks.
“I’ve done some work with a psychologist which has put me in a good mindframe and hopefully I can build on that and get back to the levels of last season.
“My loan was until the last game of the season so felt like I was still part of the squad [and] the manager and players kept in touch. That helped me get through the early stages and influenced my decision to come back.”
