Dixon tips Lukaku to shine at Chelsea
Chelsea legend Kerry Dixon is convinced Romelu Lukaku will be a key player at Stamford Bridge next season.
The Belgian striker has impressed while on loan at Everton, scoring nine goals so far, and was this week boosted by news that an ankle injury he suffered in Tuesday’s Merseyside derby against Liverpool is not as serious as first feared.
Lukaku also scored 17 goals while on loan at West Brom last term and was hoping to prove himself at Chelsea this season.
But, despite Jose Mourinho only having Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba as recognised strikers, he was allowed to move to Goodison Park.
Recent speculation has suggested that he could be sold by Blues boss Mourinho this summer, but Dixon believes Lukaku will be given a chance to make his mark.
“Lukaku will come back in the summer and I certainly think he will be part of the four next season,” Chelsea’s third all-time leading goalscorer told West London Sport.
“One of the strikers will go, I think he will keep Fernando Torres, but Demba Ba or maybe Samuel Eto’o will go and Jose will look at having four forwards.”
One of those forwards will be Wayne Rooney if Mourinho gets his way, although reports suggest the England star is set to sign a new contract at Manchester United.
Dixon, who scored 193 goals for the Blues, added: “There is still talk of Rooney and he is obviously wanted and he gives so many options.
“If he gets Rooney he could play up front or in behind. He gives quality and options.”
