Arsenal 1 Chelsea 0
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal won the Community Shield for Arsenal and gave Arsene Wenger his first victory over Jose Mourinho.
Gunners boss Wenger had not beaten the Chelsea manager in 13 previous encounters, but Oxlade-Chamberlain’s 24th-minute strike at Wembley was enough to give Arsenal the trophy in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season.
Goalkeeper Petr Cech, playing against his former club, looked assured on his debut for Wenger’s side, although Chelsea had chances to equalise after Oxlade-Chamberlain’s left-footed effort hit the top corner of the net.
Ramires should have levelled when he headed Loic Remy’s cross wide of the target in the first half.
Eden Hazard also missed a good chance for the Blues and Cech did well to keep out a free-kick from Oscar.
The absence of a not-quite-fit Diego Costa robbed champions Chelsea of much of their attacking verve.
And with Remy off the pace and caught offside too often for Mourinho’s liking, Radamel Falcao was introduced at half time.
But there was little cutting edge over the 90 minutes, and FA Cup holders Arsenal went close late on through Santi Cazorla and Kieran Gibbs.
Chelsea: Courtois; Ivanovic, Terry (Moses 82), Cahill, Azpilicueta (Zouma 69); Ramires (Oscar 54), Matic; Willian, Fabregas, Hazard; Remy (Falcao 45).
Subs not used: Begovic, Cuadrado, Mikel.
