Silva still out and Havertz also likely to miss Newcastle game

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Thiago Silva will remain sidelined for Chelsea’s trip to Newcastle and that Kai Havertz is also likely to miss out again.

Veteran defender Silva is recovering from a thigh problem, while Havertz has been struggling with an injury he recently picked up in training.

Chelsea are hoping to have Silva back for the game at home to Southampton a week on Saturday.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel expects Timo Werner to return to the squad for Monday’s match at St James’ Park, having missed Thursday’s FA Cup win at Barnsley because of a knock.

Andreas Christensen also looks likely to be available.

The defender was taken off at half-time at Barnsley because of a headache, which Tuchel said was not concussion-related.

“It should be absolutely OK for Timo Werner,” Tuchel said at a news conference on Friday morning.

“This (game) may be too close for Kai and for sure for Thiago.

“For Thiago we are aiming for Southampton – we are trying hard. Let’s see if we make it. We cannot promise.

“For Kai, let’s see if he’s out (training) today. I’m not sure. Maybe he will be missing this match as well.
