Davide Zappacosta has suffered a serious knee injury in training and faces a long spell on the sidelines.
The defender, who is on loan at Roma from Chelsea, sustained cruciate ligament damage on Friday morning in what the Italian club have described as “non-contact incident”.
Zappacosta, 27, moved on a six-month loan during the summer with a view to extending the deal until the end of the season.
He extended his contract with Chelsea until 2021 before making the move.
Zappacosta came on as a substitute in Roma’s Europa League game against Austrian side Wolfsberger AC on Thursday evening.
