Chelsea boss ready to change tactics

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo says his side may have to curb some of their attacking instincts in order to turn around their fortunes.

The 2-1 defeat away against West Brom was their fourth game without a win.

And although the Blues were widely praised for their attacking displays during the early part of the season, their defensive shortcomings appear to have forced the Italian into a rethink.

“We are playing a little bit different but we may have to go a little bit back to win games,” said Di Matteo.

“Make sure that, first and foremost, we do not concede and then we always have good combinations and quality to score a goal.

“Maybe it’s a time where we might have to change things a little bit in terms of selection and the way we play.

“It becomes difficult when you have to score three goals to win. Our defending was very poor even though we didn’t concede many chances.

“You cannot always rely on scoring three goals to win a game. Sometimes you have to win 1-0 and make sure you are focused on your defending and are responsible.

“Maybe we need to sacrifice the attacking options to go a little bit more defensive.

“It’s not a question of people knowing how to exploit us. We had a lot of joy and long-term that is the way we want to go, but we need to get a couple of positive results to get our confidence high again.”

Chelsea face Juventus in a vital Champions League game on Tuesday and Di Matteo is confident they can bounce back.

He said: “We have two massive games but we have players with experience who have been in this position before.

“For some reason November seems a bad month and it seems to be again this year.”
