Victor Moses’ winner maintained Chelsea’s slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
After Olivier Giroud’s attempt to meet Emerson Palmieri’s left-wing cross with a scorpion kick, the ball dropped to Moses, who fired past keeper Nick Pope at his near post.
It closed the gap between Chelsea and fourth-placed Tottenham to five points.
Moses was also involved in the build up to a 20th-minute own goal by Kevin Long which put the visitors ahead.
He was superbly picked out by Gary Cahill and controlled the ball on the run before sending it into the danger area, where Long diverted it into his own net.
Ashley Barnes’ equaliser midway through the second half was even more fortuitous.
Blues keeper Thibaut Courtois was poised to gather Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s tame shot, but the ball struck Barnes and ended up in the corner of the net.
It came nine minutes after Alvaro Morata should have made it 2-0 but shot woefully wide after being put through by N’Golo Kante.
But Chelsea hit back and Burnley were on level terms for just five minutes.
Emerson was always lively on the flank and his assist for the winner capped an impressive full Premier League debut by the Brazilian.
Chelsea: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Rudiger, Moses, Kante, Bakayoko, Emerson (Zappacosta 84), Pedro, Morata (Hazard 71), Giroud.
