Boss warns Chelsea after Lisbon triumph
Roberto Di Matteo has warned his players they cannot afford to take anything for granted when Benfica visit Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Salomon Kalou’s goal in Lisbon gave Chelsea a 1-0 first-leg victory and left them within sight of the semi-finals.
Interim Blues boss Di Matteo was delighted with the result but insisted it would be a huge mistake to believe the tie is over.
“It’s a dangerous result if we think we’ve already qualified – we cannot think we’re through yet,” he said.
“We’ve put ourselves in a good position, but it’s only one goal. You look at the results which have been achieved in the tournament, and we’re not going to sleep easily because of that.”
Di Matteo, who made a number of changes for the game, added: “It was an excellent performance from the whole team.
“Benfica are a good side with good individual players and are a threat from set-plays. But I always felt we looked solid defensively and I always fancied us to score a goal.”
