Sturridge could still play in Olympics

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo believes Daniel Sturridge could yet feature in the Olympics despite the Blues forward being diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Sturridge is currently being treated at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, where his condition is being closely monitored.

The 22-year-old is showing signs of improvement and is still hoping to link-up with the Great Britain squad for the Games.

“It’s a question now of monitoring his health. That’s what most matters to everybody. We have a doctor with him and are updated on an almost hourly basis.

“We’ll see where he is and make a decision with the doctors. The fact he’s feeling better is very positive and I’m optimistic he will recover and be able to join them [the squad].”

Viral meningitis, although debilitating, is less serious than the bacterial strain of the disease, which is potentially life-threatening.

A number of current and former footballers have suffered from viral meningitis, including Lee Sharpe and Ian Rush.

Australian midfielder George Kulscar had the illness while at QPR in 1999.

Sturridge released a statement in which he confirmed his health is improving and that he remains confident of playing for Stuart Pearce’s side.

“I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics,” he said.

“I am fortunate to have received many wishes of support and I want to thank everybody who has sent messages.

“The Chelsea medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary’s Hospital have been outstanding throughout.”
