Marco van Ginkel played the whole 90 minutes as Chelsea won 4-2 at Aston Villa in the Under-21 Premier League – a win that took Dermot Drummy’s side second in the table.
The Dutch midfielder, recently back in action for the Under-21s after six months out with a knee injury, set up his team’s second goal and hit the bar in the closing stages of the game at Villa Park, where John Swift and Lewis Baker both scored twice.
Swift put Chelsea ahead following good work by Nathan Ake and he restored their lead after Villa equalised, finishing well when found by Van Ginkel’s ball over the top.
Chelsea led 3-1 at the interval after Swift turned provider to set up Baker, but Villa started the second half strongly and reduced the deficit again.
However, after Van Ginkel went close, Baker sealed a deserved win with a penalty in stoppage time after Swift was fouled in the box.
