Benitez plays down defensive injury fears

Rafael Benitez is optimistic injuries picked up by Chelsea defenders David Luiz and Gary Cahill in the 2-0 victory against West Ham will not prove to be serious.

Luiz limped off with 12 minutes of the game remaining, while Cahill also appeared to suffer a knock.

The interim Blues boss played down suggestions that Cahill could miss England’s upcoming matches, although both men had yet to be assessed by Chelsea’s medical staff.

Benitez said: “Cahill I think is okay. I think everybody will be available, but I’m not sure. I spoke to David but the doctor has not seen him yet.”

The injuries aside, it was an excellent day for Chelsea and especially Frank Lampard, whose first-half opener was his 200th goal for the club.

“It is a fantastic achievement for any player, but especially a midfielder,” Benitez declared.

“Hopefully he can now score more goals. It’s a great achievement and I’m really pleased with him.”

The Spaniard added: “The team from the beginning kept up the momentum and was playing well.

“We were attacking and creating chances. I’m pleased with the performance of the team and another clean sheet.”
