Chelsea are hoping Ashley Cole will be able to return to training on Monday and be included in the squad for the Champions League match against Schalke.
Cole was hurt during the Blues’ recent win at Norwich and was forced to miss England’s World Cup qualifiers this week.
He has been ruled out of Chelsea’s clash with Cardiff on Saturday and Tuesday’s game in Germany may also be too soon for him.
Manager Jose Mourinho said: “It depends on the pain. It’s not a dangerous situation but is very painful and at this moment the pain persists.
“We will see if on Monday he can train and see if he can play in the Champions League.”
And Mourinho insisted he has no reservations about selecting Ryan Bertrand for as long as Chelsea are without Cole.
Bertrand’s appearance against Swindon in the Capital One Cup is his only first-team outing so far this season.
“I never gave him a chance because I wanted to give stability to the team so kept the same back four,” Mourinho explained.
“I changed between John Terry, Gary Cahill and David Luiz but I kept the full-backs, Cole and Branislav Ivanovic.
“Cesar Azpilicueta and Bertrand are very good players. Of course I want Ashley back, but Bertrand is more than ready.”
