Chelsea Ladies close to title after thrashing Liverpool
Ji So-Yun scored twice in a devastating attacking display as Chelsea Ladies crushed Liverpool Ladies 4-0 to go back to the top of the Women’s Super League table with one game to play.
Ji scored a stunning opener and wrapped up the win after strikes from England duo Eni Aluko and Fran Kirby to regain the two-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, who had earlier thumped Bristol Academy Women 6-1.
Liverpool hit the woodwork twice in quick succession when the score was goalless, through Ingrid Ryland’s curled strike and Gemma Bonner’s looping header.
But Women’s FA Cup winners Chelsea were the better side and their potent attacking quartet of Kirby, Aluko, Ji and Gemma Davison were just too good for the hosts.
Ji struck first, showing sublime control and technique before crashing the ball in from Davison’s cross.
Kirby swept in the second following some superb backtracking and direct running by Aluko.
Aluko pounced on a defensive mistake by Satara Murray to run through and make it 3-0 after the break, and Ji sealed the win from another Davison cross.
Chelsea are at home against Sunderland Ladies in the final game of the season next Sunday, while Manchester City host Notts County Ladies.
Victory will guarantee Emma Hayes’ side a first top-flight title, while a draw may mean the title is decided on goal difference – Chelsea’s is currently superior to City’s by three goals.
