Attacking options have boosted Chelsea Ladies – Flaherty
Chelsea Ladies defender Gilly Flaherty says their strength in depth and quality of their forward players will be vital for the title run-in.
Chelsea brushed aside Birmingham 4-0 on Sunday, despite being reduced to 10 players when the score was still 1-0 in the first half.
And with just four games to go in the Women’s Super League season, Flaherty is in confident mood.
“When you look at the bench and you have players like Fran Kirby or Laura Coombs coming on then you know you have strong squad,” she told West London Sport.
“We have that quality and that will really help us in the next few weeks.”
Flaherty scored the second goal against Birmingham, with Kirby coming off the bench to score the fourth and wrap up an impressive win.
Eni Aluko grabbed both the other goals in a scintillating attacking display, ensuring the FA Cup winners are top of the table by a point from Sunderland – although Manchester City Women are three points behind with a game in hand.
Flaherty added: “Eni, on her day, is one of the best wingers in the country. No defender can get near her. And when we were down to 10 she put a shift in.
“Fran is incredible and has a lot of potential. It is her chance to make it in Super League 1.
“She has been suffering from an injury but she is now clear of it and we will hopefully see more of her.
“We are creating chances and we put them away which is something we have not been doing previously.”
