Chapman influence behind Bright England call – Rafferty
Claire Rafferty says Chelsea Ladies skipper Katie Chapman has been a major factor in helping their team-mate Millie Bright earn her first international call-up.
Bright, 23, has excelled playing alongside Blues skipper Chapman this season and has been rewarded with a place in England manager Mark Sampson’s squad for the Euro 2017 qualifying double-header against Estonia and Belgium later this month.
And left-back Rafferty says Bright’s attitude has been just as important as her ability.
“I am buzzing for her but it is no surprise at all,” Rafferty told West London Sport. “She is such a good young player.
“But I think her willingness to learn is the biggest single reason why she is in the position she is.
“She has been on of our most consistent performers this season and having Katie Chapman as a role model has been a huge help.
“Like Katie, Millie has captain-like qualities; she is tough-tackling, has a real presence, is athletic and can play. And she lets her actions do the talking.”
Chelsea goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer, defender Gilly Flaherty, and wingers Gemma Davison and Karen Carney have also been included in the England squad.
