Brentford 0 Wrexham 1
James Tolley was Wrexham’s hero as the Conference side sent Brentford tumbling out of the FA Cup.
Tolley’s 32nd-minute goal – a sizzling half-volley after the Bees failed to clear Lee Fowler’s corner – stunned Uwe Rosler’s men, who were unable to find an equaliser.
It continued their miserable form at Griffin Park, where they have now lost five of their last seven matches.
Brentford were given early warnings, with Fowler, Adrian Cieslewicz and Jay Harris all going close for Wrexham before Tolley’s decisive goal.
Rosler made a double substitution at half-time, sending on Niall McGinn and youngster Manny Oyeleke, but Wrexham continued to have the upper hand.
Cieslewicz almost made it 2-0, shooting wide after a mistake by defender Andy Woodman, and Nathaniel Knight-Percival just missed the target with an acrobatic effort which beat Bees keeper Richard Lee.
Brentford duo Gary Alexander and Leon Legge went close with headers, but that was as good as it got for the home team despite the late introduction of Clayton Donaldson.
It was a deserved triumph for Wrexham, whose manager Andy Morrell revealed he was pleased Donaldson was not in the Brentford starting line-up.
But Rosler defended his decision to name the striker among his substitutes.
“I don’t think I can play Clayton every single game from start,” he said.
“I think Clayton and Niall McGinn have played a lot of games this season and I regard Myles Weston and Mike Grella as very good competitors for those places.”
However, Rosler admitted: “We started very poorly and it’s my responsibility to find out why. By no standards was it good enough.”
