Woe for Bonham as Bees fringe players are crushed by Oxford

Brentford 0 Oxford Utd 4

It was an awful night for keeper Jack Bonham as Brentford suffered an embarrassing first-round exit from the Capital One Cup.

They were 3-0 down at Griffin Park inside 12 minutes after goals from Liam Sercombe and Danny Hylton were followed by a stunning long-range strike from Kemar Roofe.

And League Two side Oxford increased their lead when Johnny Mullins netted seven minutes after the break.

The horror show began with Sercombe capitalising on a slip by Andreas Bjelland by firing in from near the edge of the penalty area.

Bonham was then left red-faced when Hylton charged down his clearance, with the ball rebounding off the striker and into the net.

Worse followed for the hapless Bonham when he raced from his line to head clear and was caught out by Roofe, who pounced on the loose ball and scored with a brilliant effort from 40 yards.

There seemed little hope of a second-half Bees fightback – and no hope at all once Mullins belted home from 10 yards out soon after the restart.

Bonham was one of several fringe players who featured in a much-changed Brentford line-up.

There were senior debuts for youngsters Courtney Senior, Josh Laurent and Jermaine Udumaga.

It was also a first outing for summer signings Bjelland – who was substituted at half-time – Lasse Vibe and Yoann Barbet.

Brentford: Bonham; Clarke, Bjelland (Bidwell 45), Barbet, O’Connell; Williams, Yennaris (McCormack 52), Laurent; Udumaga, Vibe, Senior (Gogia 75).
Subs not used: Smith, Kerschbaumer.
