Brentford 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1
Sam Hutchinson’s stoppage-time equaliser denied Brentford their third successive home win – and both sides finished with 10 men.
A dreadful mistake from Kieran Westwood gifted the Bees a 53rd-minute lead when the Wednesday keeper smashed a clearance against Lasse Vibe and into an empty net following good pressure from the Dane.
The visitors dominated the game and missed an open net through Lucas Joao while having two further efforts cleared off the line before half-time.
Goalscorer Vibe and Wednesday defender David Jones were both dismissed for second bookings in the final 20 minutes before former Chelsea defender Hutchinson sent a diving header into the top corner right at the death.
Wednesday should have been out of sight by the interval, with attacker Joao having two attempts to find an empty from two yards out but blazing the chance over the bar, and both Nico Yennaris and Harlee Dean clearing further chances off the line.
Yennaris halted Tom Lees’ thumping header and Dean blocked a close-range shot from Steven Fletcher, while Bees keeper Daniel Bentley made two excellent saves to deny Kieran Lee and then keep out Joao’s header at the far post to keep the half-time score goalless.
Unchanged Brentford went closest in the first half when Scott Hogan fired against a Wednesday defender after being picked out at the back peg by Ryan Woods, who forced Westwood into a good save from distance just after half-time.
But Republic of Ireland keeper Westwood allowed Vibe to close-off his clearance and gift the Bees the lead against the run of play.
Wednesday dominated the remaining minutes and looked likely to equalise despite Jones’s sending-off on 73 minutes.
Bentley pulled off two great saves to deny a Fernando Forestieri free-kick and substitue Almen Abdi’s effort towards the far corner, but he could not stop Hutchinson’s header after a late corner was knocked on to the far post.
