Two more for Hogan as Bees beat Cardiff
Brentford 2 Cardiff City 1
Substitute Scott Hogan scored two late goals in a dramatic Brentford win.
Hogan, who recently returned to action after 18 months on the sidelines, smashed in the opener on 83 minutes after Yoann Barbet’s shot bounced back off the crossbar.
Hogan then coolly slotted in a second three minutes later after he was set up by Lasse Vibe, who had missed a glorious chance to score earlier in the game.
Cardiff substitute Kenneth Zohore pulled a goal back in the 90th minute to set up a ferocious five minutes of stoppage time, but the Bees held on.
Brentford struggled to create chances in a goalless first half, with Ryan Woods going closest when he fired over from a tight angle on the half-hour mark.
Vibe was also inches away from a tapping home a cross from youngster Josh Clarke, while Anthony Pilkington missed the visitors’ best chance before the break – an unmarked header from eight yards out.
The Bees bossed the second half but Vibe, with only the keeper to beat, shot straight at David Marshall.
Hogan replaced Konstantin Kerschbaumer on 76 minutes and broke the deadlock, before sidefooting the second past Marshall from a tight angle to make it three goals in two games for the fit-again forward.
Brentford switched off at the back and allowed Zohore to poke home from just inside the box, but they stood firm in the closing minutes.
