Second-half goals see off Brentford

Sheffield United 2 Brentford 0

Second-half goals from Jordan Slew and Richard Cresswell condemned Brentford to their first league defeat under Uwe Rosler.

The German’s reign started in fine style against Yeovil last weekend and his side did worry United at times, but the Blades were worthy winners.

Gary Alexander went close for the Bees with a first-half header that landed on top of the goal, while Brentford’s on-loan Celtic man Niall McGinn twice fired wide.

At the other end, goalkeeper Richard Lee did well to keep out a shot from Slew and even better to block Stephen Quinn’s attempt to force home the rebound.

But Lee could not stop the Yorkshire side going ahead when Quinn’s cross found its way to Cresswell, who pulled the ball back for Slew to score with the help of a deflection.

Worse followed for Brentford when Matt Lawton’s 70th-minute ball into the box was tapped in at the far post by Cresswell.

Jonathan Douglas missed a chance to pull a goal back when he headed Jake Reeves’ cross wide, before United keeper Steve Simonsen produced late saves to deny Charlie MacDonald and Myles Weston.
