Chesterfield 2 Brentford 3
Brentford ended a promising first campaign under boss Uwe Rosler with an away victory – their eighth in the league this season.
An own goal from Chesterfield’s Josh Thompson gave the Bees a first-half lead before Touimani Diagouraga added a second on the hour.
Frank Moussa pulled a goal back for the relegated Spireites but Clayton Donaldson restored a two-goal lead when he poked home Jake Reeves’ corner, before a wonder strike from Mark Allot gave the home side some consolation.
Brentford’s only change saw Leon Legge replace Karleigh Osborne, who looks likely to have played his last game for the Bees as his contract is up in the summer.
Also out of contract is full-back Shaleum Logan, but he started in an otherwise unchanged team to the one that lost to Sheffield Wednesday last week.
Chesterfield played the better football in a flat first-half but fell behind when Thompson headed Sam Saunders’ 12th-minute cross into his own net under pressure from Legge.
Brentford, who end the season in ninth place, did not have another clear-cut chance until just before the interval, when Saunders sent a curling effort wide of the post from 18 yards out.
Diagouraga doubled the Bees lead on the hour mark when he broke from the centre-circle and exchanged passes with Saunders before slotting past Tommy Lee.
Moussa pulled a goal back in the 69th minute after Scott Boden’s shot rebounded off the post.
Keeper Simon Moore then denied Chesterfield an equaliser when he pushed away a Craig Westcarr header from close range.
Youth team graduate Reeves came on as a substitute and he provided the corner for Donaldson to make sure all the points went back to Griffin Park.
Allot smashed home a long-range effort in stoppage time, which proved to be the last kick of the game.
