Rosler unhappy about penalty decision

Brentford manager Uwe Rosler criticised the referee’s decision to award Peterborough a penalty during his team’s 2-1 defeat in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Andy Davies immediately pointed to the spot when debutant Raphaël Calvet tangled with Posh forward Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, even though the French defender appeared to make contact with the ball first.

The Bees were already behind at that point after an unlucky Martin Taylor own goal, but Rosler felt the spot-kick was the “decisive moment” in the game.

Bidwell had a good game for Brentford

He said: “It was clear to see, he clearly played the ball. From our point the referee had a very good view of the situation.

“On the DVD you see he [Davies] is just 10 metres in a straight line away. It’s clear to see that Rafa plays the ball.

“It was his [Calvet’s] first game and I think he did extremely well, battled his way through 90 minutes against one of the best teams in the league.

“It’s ended for him like that, giving away a penalty, and it wasn’t a penalty. The referee got that one wrong.”

Brentford fought back after the penalty, with a Ben Nugent header setting up a tense finale that saw Marcello Trotta and George Saville go close to equalising.

Despite the defeat, Rosler was happy with the display.

He said: “Sure some of them were back from injury, but they all did very well, so I’m pleased with the performance. We had a right go.

“Marcello Trotta looked much better – he nearly got us an equaliser – so today I’m much happier.

“Ben Nugent deserves a game and he came on. He’s worked extremely hard to get his fitness back.

“He gave us good reasons in the development games that we could use him now in the first team. He got a goal and he pushed very hard.”
