Reeves sent off in Bees cup exit

Jake Reeves was sent off as Brentford’s season began with a first-round exit from the League Cup.

Ashley Hemmings netted the only goal of the game, firing home the loose ball after Bees skipper Kevin O’Connor had tackled Will Grigg inside the area.

An unmarked O’Connor had earlier sent a header sailing over the bar from just six yards out following a Sam Saunders free-kick.

After Hemmings’ eighth-minute goal, worse followed for Uwe Rosler’s side when Reeves was red-carded after the midfelder lunged wildly at Adam Chambers midway through the first half.

Brentford had a real go in the second half but Walsall keeper David Grof kept them at bay with a number of saves, the best of which denied Harry Forrester.
