Pritchard’s penalty puts Brentford fourth

Norwich City 1 Brentford 2

Alex Pritchard’s 71st-minute penalty gave Brentford victory at Carrow Road and took them up to fourth in the Championship.

They were the better side throughout and went ahead in the 21st minute following a sharp counter-attack after Norwich’s Steven Whittaker had given the ball away.

Andre Gray, who had earlier missed a great chance to open the scoring, teed up Jota and the Spaniard found the far corner with a lovely finish.

The Canaries levelled against the run of play six minutes later when Nathan Redmond cut in from the right and his deflected shot ended up in the net.

Brentford continued to press in the second half and would have regained the lead had keeper John Ruddy not denied Jonathan Douglas.

But Ruddy was unable to rescue his side when Brentford were awarded a penalty after Gray was tripped near the edge of the box by a combination of Carlos Cuéllar and Michael Turner.

The outstanding Pritchard made no mistake from the spot, scoring his fifth goal since arriving on loan from Tottenham in the summer.

The visitors thoroughly deserved their win – Brentford’s first at Norwich since 1929 – but had to withstand a spell of late pressure, during which Bees keeper David Button superbly kept out Cameron Jerome’s follow-up after Bradley Johnson’s long-range drive had hit the bar.

Button produced another late save, this time from Lewis Grabban, as his team held on for a fifth victory in their last seven away matches.
