Brentford 2 Exeter 0
Saido Berahino scored his second brace in as many home games as Brentford maintained their impressive recent form at Griffin Park.
The on-loan West Brom striker was quickest to a loose ball in the area to fire home the first just before half-time.
Exeter’s David Noble was sent off shortly before Berahino headed in his second on 68 minutes.
The victory – Brentford’s third home win in a row – closed the gap on sixth-placed Notts County to six points.
Simon Moore kept his place in goal and made two fine saves to deny the away side the lead and provide a base for the Bees to take control of the game.
Berahino has been lauded for his impact since arriving on loan from the Premier League last month and scored twice in the recent 4-0 thrashing of Carlisle.
And he broke the deadlock four minutes before the break when he tapped home a knockdown from Jake Bidwell’s free-kick.
And he was on hand to capitalise immediately on the extra man given from the sending-off of Noble, who was dismissed for elbowing Harlee Dean.
Berahino found himself unmarked in the box to head in Niall McGuinn’s cross.
