Grigg’s winner extends Brentford’s run
Notts County 0 Brentford 1
Will Grigg’s goal was enough to bury rock-bottom Notts County and ensure Brentford stayed fourth in League One.
The Northern Ireland international snatched the lead against the run of play late in the first half after being set up by Toumani Diagouraga.
The visitors, starting the day 20 places and 23 points above the Meadow Lane club, struggled to break down their much maligned opponents for long periods before the break.
Bees keeper David Button was scrambling almost immediately to make a triple save to deny the Magpies inside four minutes.
He first spilled Jack Grealish’s effort from distance, then foiled Danny Haynes’ follow up, before eventually parrying Jamal Campbell-Ryce’s angled shot to safety.
Adam Forshaw flashed two long-range shots past the Notts post, but it was little respite for Uwe Rosler’s men.
Clayton Donaldson came to Brentford’s rescue on 25 minutes, blocking Gary Liddle’s powerful effort on the line after Button teed the Magpies skipper up with a weak punch from an Alan Sheehan corner.
The hosts continued to pile the pressure on and Campbell-Ryce should have given them the lead on 42 minutes, but blasted over the bar after Haynes’ sweeping pass across the face of goal found the winger unmarked at the far post.
Less than two minutes later Grigg made Notts pay, taking his chance brilliantly with a first-time finish under keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
Diagouraga, making his first start in nine games, created the opportunity from nothing after stripping Andre Bouchard of possession before slipping the ball into the box for Grigg to cooly finish.
Donaldson had two chances in quick succession to double the advantage after the hour. He pulled his first just wide of the far post before misdirecting a free header.
Callum McGregor and Sheehan threaten to level late on but the Bees hung on for their eighth win in nine games.
