Brentford 1 Yeovil 3
Tony Craig endured a nightmare home debut – and new signing Paul Hayes missed a penalty within a minute of coming on as a substitute – as Brentford slumped to defeat at Griffin Park.
A mistake by defender Craig, a summer arrival from Millwall, led to James Hayter giving Yeovil the lead midway through the first half.
Clayton Donaldson equalised, but after Hayes’ miss Hayter netted his second and Craig’s late own goal sealed the Bees’ fate.
They looked fairly comfortable until Craig over-hit a pass to centre-back partner Leon Legge and the ball drifted towards the left flank and Sam Foley, whose excellent cross was fired home by Hayter.
The goal came against the run of play as Yeovil keeper Marek Stech had produced two good saves, first diving to his left to tip away Adam Forshaw’s 30-yarder and later denying Farid El Alagui at point-blank range.
But Stech was unable to rescue the Glovers when Donaldson curled a low shot beyond him and in off the post to haul Brentford level nine minutes into the second half.
With his team in the ascendancy, boss Uwe Rosler looked to maintain the momentum with a bold double substitution, sending Harry Forrester and striker Hayes on in place of Toumani Diagouraga and the below-par Sam Saunders.
And after defender Byron Webster clumsily handled inside the area while under no real pressure, Hayes – signed this week from Charlton – stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick.
He placed the ball to Stech’s left but the Yeovil stopper guessed correctly and pulled off a fine save.
Having been given a reprieve, the visitors won the game with two goals in the space of four minutes.
Hayter blasted into the corner from 10 yards out after Brentford had failed to clear their lines, before Craig turned Lewis Young’s low cross into his own net.
