Brentford 2 Carlisle United 1
Simon Moore’s penalty save meant Paul Hayes’ second-half goal was enough to give Brentford the points.
The Bees were fortunate to go in level at half-time even though Jonathan Douglas had put them ahead with a fierce volley.
Joe Garner equalised for Carlisle with a classy turn and finish and the away side had chances to add a second before the break.
But Hayes steered in from close range on the hour and then Moore pushed away Garner’s spot-kick after Tony Craig had fouled David Symington.
Brentford’s opener came against the run of play when Harry Forrester’s deep corner found the boot of Douglas and he smashed through the host of bodies.
And after Garner equalised, Carlisle started the second half the brightest before Hayes scored from another corner.
But Moore will take all the plaudits for a fine penalty save 15 minutes from time that denied Carlisle what would have been a deserved point.
Brentford: Moore; Logan, Dean, Craig, Bidwell; Forshaw (Saunders 87), Douglas, Forrester (Barron 83); Hayes, Donaldson
Subs not used: Lee, Dallas, Oyeleke, German, Aaron Pierre
