Brentford 2 Yeovil 0
Uwe Rosler made a winning start to his reign, with Shaleum Logan – his first signing as Brentford boss – sealing a deserved victory.
Logan scored the Bees’ all-important second goal after Gary Alexander had put them ahead with a first-half penalty.
Released by Rosler’s former club Manchester City, right-back Logan produced a hugely impressive Bees debut – and was involved in their controversial opener.
Referee Pat Miller awarded a spot-kick on the advice of his assistant, who deemed that Logan’s 27th-minute cross had been handled by Nathan Jones.
Yeovil’s players were furious with the decision and their protests meant Alexander was kept waiting before slotting home from 12 yards.
Logan was making his Brentford bow along with fellow summer signings Jonathan Douglas, Clayton Donaldson, Niall McGinn and Marcel Eger.
There was also a full debut for exciting teenage midfielder Jake Reeves, whose pre-season performances convinced Rosler to select him.
Having been unable to convince Miller not to give a penalty against him, Jones’ afternoon got even worse when he dragged a shot horribly wide of the target after being put through on goal by Paul Wotton’s pass.
Jones probably had little sympathy for Miller when the Bedfordshire official was then floored after the ball was accidentally belted into his face.
Unfortunately for the Glovers wing-back, Brentford were just as unforgiving in the second half, putting Town under sustained pressure.
They almost went further ahead when Eger’s close-range flick was saved by keeper Jed Steer, before on-loan Celtic man McGinn fired narrowly over.
The debutants seemed to be queuing up to try their luck and Donaldson was the next to have a go, bulldozing Bondz N’Gala out of his way to latch onto Karleigh Osborne’s long ball, only to then blast over.
Eger came back for more, meeting Reeves’ right-wing corner with a header that brought a stunning save from Steer.
But there was to be a debut goal with 14 minutes remaining – and it was Logan who got it, steering the ball into the far corner of the net after exchanging passes on the right with substitute Sam Saunders.
Alexander should have made it three in injury time, but blazed over after being teed up by Kevin O’Connor.
