Bennett ends Brentford’s barren run
Brentford 2 Chesterfield 1
On-loan centre-back Dale Bennett was Brentford’s hero as his debut goal gave them their first win in seven home matches.
Bennett, brought in from Watford because Leon Legge and Karleigh Osborne are out injured, headed home Sam Saunders’ 82nd-minute corner – much to the relief of the home side’s fans and manager Uwe Rosler.
The Bees were busy in the first 25 minutes and were rewarded when Saunders curled a stunning free-kick past goalkeeper Greg Fleming.
Struggling Chesterfield hit back only 120 seconds later when former QPR striker Leon Clarke pounced on a defensive mix-up and smashed the ball past keeper Richard Lee.
In the second half, Brentford striker Clayton Donaldson had a header cleared off the line, Jonathan Douglas forced Fleming into a smart stop, and Saunders was unable to connect with Niall McGinn’s cross.
The Spireites almost caught Brentford on the break, with Nathan Smith heading over, before Bennett came up with the winner.
Brentford then went close to adding a third, with Donaldson twice blasting over and substitute Gary Alexander volleying wide.
