Hogan the hero as Bees rescue point

Scott Hogan’s stoppage-time equaliser salvaged a point for Brentford at Griffin Park.

It was the striker’s first goal for the Bees and first since battling back from more than a year and a half of knee injuries.

On as 72nd-minute substitute, he was in the right place to get a glancing header to Jake Bidwell’s header back across the face of Bristol City’s goal.

It came five minutes after Hogan had a penalty saved by City keeper Richard O’Donnell.

Hogan won the penalty himself when he was tripped by defender Nathan Baker as the pair chased a long ball into the box from another Bees substitute, Konstantin Kerschbaumer.

Brentford had fallen behind completely against the run of play on the stroke of half-time, when City’s Lee Tomlin was given room to turn and dart at a retreating defence before placing a perfect low shot beyond David Button.

Dean Smith’s men missed first-half chances, with Lasse Vibe being denied by the legs of O’Donnell and a last-ditch intervention from Aden Flint.

The pattern remained the same in the second half, with the Bees carving out good chances.

Alan McCormack went close with a glancing near-post header and the outstanding O’Donnell kept out a Vibe header.
